Sara Zhu: Music

Sara Zhu is a musician, teacher, and photographer based out of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. She is a versatile artist who draws inspiration from all different mediums to create her art. Growing up with a background in classical flute, Sara began to sing jazz at 14, emulating the records she found in her dad’s collection. She went to college initially pursuing an ambition to play in orchestras but learned her heart was in improvisation. She graduated from James Madison University in 2020 with a degree in Jazz Studies on both flute and voice and moved back to the DC area where she grew up. Sara is currently active in the DC jazz scene, playing in her duo “Sara and Austin,” amongst many other ensembles. She is an advocate for jazz genre blending, creating indie folk, RnB, rock, and pop arrangements paired with jazz influenced harmony and improvisation. Sara aims to make jazz accessible to audiences young and old.
