A 19th century hospital, La Salpêtrière, became famous as a center for the treatment of hysteria. Women were sometimes “treated” in degrading demonstrations that were open to the public. In Kelsey Mesa’s stunning new play, we follow new patient Yvette from her mysterious arrival in the hospital, through the many degrading practices by its doctor, to her ultimate fight to reclaim her life. La Salpêtrière is a story as uplifting as it is heartbreaking. It mines humor from the absurd realities of the past to deliver a magnificent tale of inspiration for all.
