God Hates Us: Death of Chocolate City
June 19th through July 21st, 2023
CHAW Art Gallery
Opening Reception on June 19th from 7:00pm-9:00pm.
“God Hates Us: The Death of Chocolate City” is a thought-provoking exploration of the decline of Blackness in DC. The series delves into the city’s societal issues and the deterioration of its urban landscape, capturing the profound consequences of external forces on this once vibrant African-American community. Through striking imagery, it highlights the loss of cultural vitality, social disintegration, and the challenges faced by marginalized residents. Abandoned structures, neglected infrastructure, and the struggles stemming from systemic racism and socioeconomic disparities are vividly portrayed. By juxtaposing images of the city’s past glory with its current state of decline, the series aims to evoke powerful emotions and implore viewers to confront the neglected issues plaguing the unique cultural fabric of Washington, D.C., known as the “Chocolate City”
