SUMMARY:We Happy Few presents "Iphigenia"
DESCRIPTION:We Happy Few presents\nIphigenia\n7:30pm — May 24 – June 17\nat the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop \nClick here for Tickets! \n\nA myth is never just one story. \nThe Greek Army cannot sail to Troy without wind\, and Artemis won’t let the winds blow without the sacrifice of King Agamemnon’s daughter. As family ties square up against patriotic duty\, the fate of the most famous war in history rests on the shoulders of Iphigenia. As the classic myth unfolds\, the chorus attempts to unearth the real story of Iphigenia\, and they will replay the events of that day as many times as needed to do it. Drawing from both Euripides and Racine\, this new adaptation is a meditation on storytelling that blends classic tragedy with madcap irreverence. \n  \nHelen Hayes Recommended We Happy Few (PERICLES\, 2018; LOVERS’ VOWS\, 2019; DESDEMONA\, 2022)\, following the success of LA LLORONA (2022)\, debuts another new show this spring. IPHIGENIA examines the ill-fortuned daughter of Agamemnon\, notable not only for the depths of her tragedy\, but for the multitude of conflicting stories concerning her fate. The ‘original’ story of a father placed in an impossible situation by his arrogance\, and his daughter’s obligation to pay the ultimate price for it\, is called into question by reinterpretations\, shocking revelations\, and deus ex machina that abound in the literary record of this legend\, making it ripe for the sort of exploration and reimagining at which We Happy Few has long excelled. \n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nIphigenia was written by Kerry McGee (LOVERS’ VOWS\, DESDEMONA). It is directed by Jennifer Hopkins (PERICLES) and Emilia Pazniokas (DESDEMONA) and stars Debora Crabbe (LOVEDAY BROOKE)\, Bri Houtman (Love Like Tuesday; Faction of Fools)\, Carolyn Kashner (American Spies and Other Homegrown Fairy Tales; The Hub Theatre)\, Mary Myers (45 Plays for 45 Presidents; NextStop Theatre Company)\, Robert Pike (FRANKENSTEIN)\, Matt Sparacino (The Rainmaker; 1st Stage Theatre)\, and Joshua Williams (Romeo & Juliet; Quill Theatre). Produced by Kerry McGee. Production manager Rachel Dixon. Stage management by Mackenzie Wentela. Lights by Jason Aufdem-Brinke\, assistant lighting design by Camille Kashaka\, sound design by Robert Pike\, set by Jon Reynolds\, costuming by Maria Bissex\, dramaturgy by Keith Hock\, graphic design by Kerry McGee. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpecial Events\nMay 26\nOpening Night Reception\nJoin the cast after the show for cupcakes\, cocktails\, and a post-show cabaret of mythological proportions from Jenna Murphy. \nJune 3\nTalkback: Women of War\nJoin dramaturg Keith Hock for a post-show discussion that ranges from Iphigenia to Clytemnestra\, from Helen to Cassandra. The women of Ancient Greece and Troy helped shape the outcome of the war just as much as the men did. And frankly\, their stories are even more interesting and provocative\, though told far less often. Ghost Helen?! Clytemnestra’s bloody revenge?! Iphigenia’s other play (that’s right\, there’s two!)?! \nJune 9\nDrinks Night at Iphigenia\nJoin award-winning DC bartender Chantal Tseng for a preshow cocktail that showcases Greek spirits. Then stick around after the show as Chantel and sommelier Vanessa Cominsky pour a selection of Greek wines and discuss all things bacchanal. \nJune 12\nIndustry Night\nA special Monday night performance with special ticket prices and beer prices.

SUMMARY:"Witching Hour" - Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:The Residents Collective (TRC) presents\nWitching Hour – Opening Reception\nFriday May 5th\, 6:30-8:30pm\nCHAW Art Gallery\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Residents Collective (TRC) is pleased to announce the opening of Witching Hour\, featuring artists MK Bailey\, Mills Brown\, Kate Fleming\, Billy Friebele\, Khadija Jahmila\, Zia Palmer\, Pam Rogers\, Tom Woodruff\, and Lenora Yerkes. The group exhibition marks TRC’s second annual presentation\, in alignment with their continued partnership with Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW). \nThe breadth of artworks exhibited are selected by Anisa Olufemi\, curator\, cultural worker\, and Fellowship Manager at Hamiltonian Artists. About the show\, Olufemi states\, “Witching Hour is an expansive\, spellbinding storybook for all ages. Its contents spill over with otherworldly illustrations and abstractions\, weaving together photo\, video\, painting\, collage\, sculpture and drawing. In this exhibition\, veils are lifted—things that lie beneath the surface of murky waters are brought to light\, shadow selves and silhouettes serve as main characters while forgotten ghost towns offer portals into the past.” \n“There is a dark side\, both visual and thematic\, present within many of the artworks. However with closer observation\, viewers will discover unexpected plot twists—scenes of climax and aftermath saturated in color and light. With an air of eeriness situated somewhere between the surreal and familiar\, Witching Hour is an exhibition that haunts\, and enchants.” \n\nExhibit is on view May 5\, 2023 – June 2\, 2023

SUMMARY:Faction of Fools presents "Love Like Tuesday"
DESCRIPTION:Faction of Fools Theater Company presents\n\n\n\n\nLove Like Tuesday\n\n\n\n\nA New Play written by Doug Robinson\, in collaboration with the devising ensemble of Faction of Fools \nThursday\, 2/16 – Saturday\, 2/18 730pm (Previews)\nMonday\, 2/20 7pm (Opening Night)\n2/23 – 3/11 Thursdays – Saturdays 730pm & Saturdays 2pm Monday 3/6 730pm (Industry Night) \n\n\n\n\nTickets: $15-$35 at www.FactionofFools.org\nTickets available at the door\nRunning time is approximately 2 hours with one intermission Family Friendly\, but contains high school aged humor. \n  \nNOT FLASHY\, NOT SIMPLE. PRESENT AND TRUE. AN ALWAYS THERE KIND OF LOVE… \nJoin Faction of Fools Theatre Company’s world premiere production of Love Like Tuesday written by playwright Doug Robinson in collaboration with the devising ensemble of Faction of Fools. Told through the lens of Faction’s signature style of Commedia dell’Arte\, a style of theatre originating in Renaissance Italy that utilizes masks and high energy physicality\, Love Like Tuesday hearkens to the nostalgia and structure of classic Rom Com films…but with a twist. \nDoreen Dawkins triumphs as the best lunch lady to ever grace the kitchens of Pangolin High\, despite being equipped with an oven that won’t go above 175 degrees. Between that and caring for her ailing mother\, Doreen has a full plate with no extra room for dessert…and certainly no space for love. And how could she with high school students ever reliant on her support\, Principal Foggybottom’s battle with the budget\, or Janitor Silver sneaking into her kitchen to prepare his famous boot stew? Doreen is surrounded with the whirlwind of life\, but time stands still when an old high school flame\, Cameron Noodle\, fills a long-term sub position at Pangolin High. In a society where hearts-falling-out-of-your-eyes is reserved for “young love”\, can a middle aged lunch lady still experience love like fireworks? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSupported by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities\, this collaborative playwrighting process exemplifies the work Faction of Fools prioritizes. Led by Robinson’s charming\, joyful\, and exquisitely powerful writing\, the development occurred over the course of one year. Beginning in January 2022\, Robinson met regularly with the devising ensemble of Faction to improvise\, workshop\, and play with the world of this production. \nIn addition to a collaborative new play development\, Love Like Tuesday features new masks designed and created by Tara Cariaso of Waxing Moon Masks through a collaborative mask design process. Cariaso designed from each actor’s face and features\, with each actor contributing to the expression and characterization of the masks through conversation and feedback. By creating masks and characters of our contemporary culture and fostering the relationship between mask designer and actor\, Faction honors the tradition of Commedia dell’Arte: featuring the artist-creator\, poking fun at current society\, and celebrating the triumph of the powerless. \nStarring in Love Like Tuesday are Mary Myers as Doreen Dawkins\, Danny Cackley\, Jordan Essex\, Bri Houtman\, Matthew Pauli\, Jasmine Proctor\, Andrew Quilpa\, and Kathryn Zoerb. \nDirector Francesca Chilcote guides the whirlwind of love into a cohesive vision of clarity and play\, highlighting the juxtaposition of lazzi and longing. The production team consists of William K. D’Eugenio as Lighting Designer\, Sarah Kamins as Stage Manager\, Nick Martin as Props Designer\, Matthew Nielson as Composer & Sound Designer\, Samantha Owen as Production Manager\, Lynly Saunders as Costume Designer\, Johnny Weissgerber as Set Designer\, and Kathryn Zoerb as Movement Coach.

DESCRIPTION:Sherry Night at La Llorona \nNovember 11\, 2022 at 6:30pm \nJoin award-winning DC bartender Chantal Tseng\, Mario Muñoz González of Lustau\, and Meryl Cocuzza of PM Spirits for a night at the theatre! We’ll start the evening with a pre-show sherry cocktail social hour. After the performance\, stick around for a sherry tasting and conversation about the Spanish influence on Mexican food and drink. \nA little about the performance: \n“You’d better behave\, or La Llorona will get you!” \nThe weeping woman of Latin American myth and legend is more than just a warning for misbehaving youths. This ghost story takes us on a horrifying journey back in time to meet La Llorona in the flesh and to watch as the tragic young woman becomes a thing of nightmares.
