SUMMARY:Staged Readings - The Coil Project
DESCRIPTION:Staged Readings\nby The Coil Project \nFriday March 1st and Saturday March 2nd @ 8:00pm \nRun time: 90min \nBlack Box Theater\, @ CHAW \n545 7th St SE\, Washington DC 20003 \nTickets available now!! –> http://tinyurl.com/mt9w4kv2 \n\nFor two nights\, we are offering a chance for you to get a taste of some of the latest that The Coil Project is working on. We’re using this as an opportunity to hear some pieces aloud for the first time and give our writers a chance to come back to pieces they may want to tweak. This will be a casual night out\, so bring a friend or two and support local theater. \nHere is a little taste of what’s in store: \nA very different kind of truth \nby Erica Smith \nNine years ago\, Cass and his sister Bee disappeared. Cass came back. Bee didn’t. Now\, Cass is a pariah and Bee is still gone. Sayer believes Cass’s crazy story… but what counts as belief? And how solid can it really be? \nThis piece has also been selected to be part of the William Inge Theatre Festival this April in Kansas. Please join us in congratulating Erica on this honor! \nThe ticket price is tiered to offer a PWYC (pay what you can) option. We are fundraising for our December production and half of the proceeds from this event will go to our venue partner\, CHAW (Capitol Hill Arts Workshop)\, and their local community initiatives. \n*Please note that CHAW is not an accessible building. There are 10+ steps to get into the entrance and steps that lead to additional restrooms inside; there is no elevator. \n  \n

SUMMARY:"Girl Math" by Sarah Jamison - Gallery Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Girl Math\n  \nby Sarah Jamison\nOn Display February 26th -March 30th\, 2024\nReception: March 2\, 5:30-7:00pm\nCHAW Gallery\, 545 7th St SE\, Washington DC 20003 \n\n\n\nSarah Jamison’s “Girl Math” presents a new series of work\, expanding the artist’s repertoire of materials to include airbrush alongside colored pencil\, acryla gouache\, ink\, and acrylic. These pieces represent her enduring interest in art history\, culture\, and digital media while introducing autobiographical elements for the first time. Each artwork probes themes that include expectations and realities\, tropes and truths\, and the pursuit of meaning. Sarah utilizes images sourced from the public domain and personal tokens; these objects operate as both symbol and narrative in her work. \nSarah Jamison received her BFA in 2010 from the Corcoran College of Art + Design. Sarah’s solo exhibitions include IA&A at Hillyer and Latela Curatorial in Washington\, DC and A Hurd Gallery in Albuquerque\, NM. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions domestically and internationally and her work has been featured as part of the 50th Anniversary of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival.

SUMMARY:We Happy Few presents "Kill the Ripper"
DESCRIPTION:We Happy Few presents\nKill the Ripper\nby Fairlith Harvey\n\nOctober 25th through November 18th \nTickets are $25 : https://www.wehappyfewdc.com/killtheripper \n\nA Feminist Victorian revenge play. Finally. \n  \nIt’s Victorian England and Jack the Ripper is on the loose. The police have very few leads as to the identity of this serial killer with a penchant for prostitutes. So what are three savvy ladies-of-the-night to do? Step one: Learn to fight. Step two: Take down Jack the Ripper themselves! This is revisionist history at it’s best: told through a feminist lens and with plenty of action. This sexy\, silly\, and touching play will leave you feeling empowered and ready to take on the world! \n  \nABOUT THE ARTISTS\nKill The Ripper was written by Fairlith Harvey. It is directed by Megan Behm (CYMBELINE; Virginia Shakespeare Festival) and stars Gabby Wolfe (LA LLORONA\, LOVERS’ VOWS)\, Paige O’Malley (DESDEMONA\, TREASURE ISLAND)\, Bri Houtman (IPHIGENIA)\, and Bob Pike (IPHIGENIA\, FRANKENSTEIN). Produced by Kerry McGee. Stage management by Mackenzie Wentela. Intimacy direction and fight choreography by Casey Kaleba. Lights by Jason Aufdem-Brinke\, sound design and composition by Ethan Balis\, technical direction by Martin Bernier\, set by Megan Holden\, costuming by Madi Wentela\, props by Rose Talbot\, dramaturgy by Alex Berrios\, dialect coaching by Jenna Berk\, graphic design by Stefany Pesta. \n  \nABOUT WE HAPPY FEW\nFounded in 2012\, We Happy Few’s mission is to rediscover and reimagine classic stories that challenge\, illuminate\, and charm audiences. We Happy Few has established itself as one of Washington D.C.’s best small theatre companies (City Paper\, 2021; the DCist\, 2015) by nurturing a creative environment that thrives on ensemble collaborations with some of the nation’s most promising emerging theatre artists. WHF’s flagship production of a six actor\, 90-minute HAMLET premiered at the 2012 Capital Fringe Festival to great acclaim\, exploring the idea that the entire play unfolded in the title character’s mind. WHF’s 2017 production of HENRY V was hailed as “a fascinating\, resonant\, and important new take on a known work” (Broadway World). We Happy Few earned its first Helen Hayes Recommendation with 2018’s PERICLES\, and its first two Helen Hayes nominations for 2019’s LOVERS’ VOWS. DC Metro Theater Arts declared We Happy Few’s work “a new approach to Shakespeare you will not want to miss.” \n  \nFURTHER INFORMATION\nKill The Ripper is presented at: \nCapitol Hill Arts Workshop (545 7th St SE\, DC) on Thursdays\, Fridays and Saturdays from October 26th to November 18th\, with additional showings on Wednesday\, October 25th and Tuesday\, October 31st. SUMMARY:Gallery Exhibit: Sassafrass\, Cypress & Indigo
DESCRIPTION:Sassafrass\, Cypress & Indigo\nGallery Exhibit\, curated by Anisa Olufemi \nOn Display October 7th through October 27th\, 2023 \nOpening Reception — Saturday\, October 7\, 2023\, 5:30pm-7:30pm\n\nCapitol Hill Arts Workshop is pleased to announce the opening of Sassafrass\, Cypress & Indigo\, featuring artists Quinci Baker\, Jermaine “jET” Carter\, Ayana Zaire Cotton\, and Kimberly King. The group exhibition\, inspired by author Ntozake Shange’s 1982 novel of the same name\, is curated by Anisa Olufemi. \nSassafrass\, Cypress & Indigo is an ode to little Black girls; the golden child\, the tomboy\, and the black sheep. It is an acknowledgement of the gifts endowed by Southern matriarchs; rootworkers\, herbalists\, spiritualists\, seers\, cast iron whisperers. It is an unraveling of Black girlhood’s curiosities and inordinate joys. \n A significant contribution to Black Feminist fiction\, Ntozake Shange’s text follows the fledgling lives of Sassafrass\, Cypress and Indigo\, three sisters born and raised in Charleston\, South Carolina. Each of them moves through the world with artistic talents and a creative spirit akin to their mother\, a locally renowned weaver. Beyond linear narrative\, Shange renders s journeys toward fulfillment by conjuring up letters from home\, journaled poems\, spell-like musings\, and family-kept recipes. \nWith a kindred tapestry-like approach\, this exhibition will consist of drawings\, sculptures\, prints\, and paintings by artists who steward a myriad of craft traditions while breathing new life into Black American visual aesthetics and material culture. Through abstraction\, figuration\, and lore viewers are drawn into a Black feminist terrain in which little Black girls emerge not only as main characters\, but as complex protagonists—carriers of craft\, ancestral knowledge\, and perhaps most importantly\, divine protection. \nSassafrass\, Cypress and Indigo offers a wide-eyed worldview. Rather than a societal status predetermined by age and physical attributes\, girlhood is extrapolated as a mode of being with lifelong utility. It is a lucky charm kept safe within our innermost selves. A liminal space that might be slipped into easily via a memory\, a feeling\, a crossing of the stars. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS\nAnisa Olufemi is a curator\, writer\, and cultural worker currently living and working in Washington\, D.C. Their work is driven by hybridized cultural productions within the ancestral and contemporary African Diaspora\, chiefly in The South and the Caribbean — pulling at the common threads between mother lands and chocolate cities in an effort to interrogate\, amend\, and reimagine Black life pre and post emancipation. Olufemi’s curatorial practice is underpinned by critical fabulation that ponders such mother lands\, and the possibilities of what they theorize as The Black Pastoral. To date they have mounted exhibitions in galleries\, museums\, and DIY spaces located in Washington\, DC; and Chicago. In 2020\, Olufemi earned their BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. \n  \nQuinci Baker is a mixed-media artist from Prince George’s County\, Maryland whose works combine various craft and repurposed materials in an exploration of collective memory\, loss\, and imagination. Baker’s practice is heavily influenced by the languages that develop through the shared experiences of marginalized people and the mnemonics that elucidate a cultural identity. Baker earned her MFA in Painting and Printmaking from the Yale School of Art in 2022 and her BFA from The Cooper Union School of Art in 2017. She lives and works in Prince George’s County\, MD. \n\nJermaine “jET” Carter is an interdisciplinary artist and Southeast Washington\, D.C. native currently residing in Alexandria\, VA. Central to Jet’s practice is the worldbuilding and rendering of “Jetco\,” an imagined\, alternate universe inhabited by caricatures\, metaphors\, and allegories. He uses nonlinear storytelling and narrative collage to map out his world\, an amalgamation of the everyday absurdities and horrors within Black American life. Jet creates surreal drawings\, toys\, and animations to illustrate scenes that take place within Jetco\, dramatizing the precarious nature of the social and political space Black Americans occupy. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Cooper Union. \nAyana Zaire Cotton (she/they) is an anti-disciplinary artist and cultural worker from Prince George’s County\, Maryland. They are currently based in Dawn\, Virginia — tucked in between the ancestral lands of the Mattaponi and Youghtanund — answering the call to steward land that has been in their family for four generations. Braiding code\, performance\, and abstraction Ayana speculates and worldbuilds alongside science and technology. Sankofa is a word and symbol of the Akan Twi and Fante languages of Ghana which translates to\, “go back and get”. Centering a sankofa sensibility\, they build databases as vessels holding seed data and experiment with shuffling algorithms to spin non-linear narratives. Ayana calls this methodology “Cykofa Narration”\, generating new worlds using the digital and social detritus of our existing world — resulting in a storytelling aesthetic that embodies circular time and troubles human authorship. \n\nKimberly King\, born Chicago\, is a Washington DC-based artist and educator\, holds a Bachelor of Arts in African American Studies and a Bachelor of Fine Art in Studio Art from Howard University. Her work has been featured in group exhibitions at various centers and galleries across the country\, including the Montpelier Cultural Art Center in Laurel\, Maryland\, the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria\, Virginia\, the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania\, the Strathmore Mansion in Bethesda\, Maryland\, and the Washington Printmakers Gallery in Washington\, DC. Her Healing Spaces Mural is part of the permanent collection at the Children’s Hospital Adolescent Center in DC.

SUMMARY:Taffety Punk presents "La Salpêtrière"
DESCRIPTION:A World Premiere play by Kelsey Mesa\nLa Salpêtrière\nA 19th century hospital\, La Salpêtrière\, became famous as a center for the treatment of hysteria. SUMMARY:Gallery Exhibit - "When the Roots Break the Concrete" - Zofie King
DESCRIPTION:When the Roots Break the Concrete\nGallery Exhibit by Zofie King\n  \nSeptember 5th-30th\, 2023\nReception: Saturday 9/9\, 5:00pm-7:00pm \nCHAW Art Gallery \n545 7th St SE \nWashington DC 20003 \n\n\n\n\n\nWhen The Roots Break The Concrete – Artist Statement \n“My pieces depict psychological cabinets of curiosity\, inspired by all that is Gothic. Flattened architectural elements\, drawn in acrylic pen and painted with gouache and watercolor\, are loosely based on partial sections and elevations of historical structures. They feature “windows” made of photographs and digital collages. The collages are exposed as cyanotypes\, overlaying parts with solvent transfers. \nThe compartmentalized architectural elements are an organizational tool\, allowing the mind to wander through and to discover what is within. It can feel a bit ominous\, similar to the sensation of going through a haunted house or taking in horror fiction. These surrealistic vignettes are an invitation to project and experience emotions\, especially anxieties. \nMost of the pieces in this show are directly inspired by the District\, especially Capitol Hill\, my former home. Walking around the Hill\, I notice ancient trees with roots so large\, they are literally bursting the sidewalks around them. It seems to me that\, having witnessed so much history and change\, they are trying to stand their ground by expanding beyond their assigned place. It makes me think of the idea of rootedness in contrast to being stuck in place\, and how there can be opposite ways of looking at a situation.”

SUMMARY:Red Rat Theater presents "The Pitchfork Disney"
DESCRIPTION:Red Rat Theater presents\nThe Pitchfork Disney\nby Philip Ridley \nDirected by: Jack Rento \nAugust 10th-August 19th\, 2023 \n\n“It’s a ghost train\, Mr. Chocolate. People love it. Sitting there in the dark. Having the living daylights scared out of them.”\nExperience Red Rat Theater’s inaugural production of Philip Ridley’s fractured fairytale\, The Pitchfork Disney. \nSet over the course of one evening\, The Pitchfork Disney follows agoraphobic twins Presley and Haley Stray as they reckon with the beauty and danger of the outside world\, unraveling their notion of safety forever. \n30 years after its Helen Hayes award-winning U.S. premiere at Woolly Mammoth\, our immersive production takes Pitchfork’s “in-yer-face” legacy literally: you’ll be in the Strays’ apartment as they confront their deepest desires and darkest fears.\nThe Pitchfork Disney is as provocative\, relevant\, and haunting in 2023 as it was in the ’90s. With the Doomsday Clock set at 90 seconds to midnight and a society capitalizing off its “us vs. them” mentality\, The Pitchfork Disney challenges modern audiences to hold a mirror to their own fears – and explore the power of facing them head-on. \nCAST (in order of appearance): Jack Rento\, Em Whitworth\, Stephen Kime & James Finley \nCREATIVE TEAM: Jack Rento (Director); Caroline Joy Johnson (Associate Director/Stage Manager); Alexis Sheeks (Lighting Designer); Andrew Goehring (Sound Designer); Sierra Young (Intimacy Direction/Fight Direction); Nick Gay (Videographer/Graphic Design) \nAge recommendation: The Pitchfork Disney is appropriate for audiences ages 18+. \nContent & Themes: The Pitchfork Disney contains mature content and themes\, including: – Discussions of homophobia\, physical and emotional abuse\, murder – Drug use – A simulated sexual assault (a finger placed in a mouth) \nBuy tickets now to experience the horror (and comedy) for yourself: \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-pitchfork-disney-capitol-hill-arts-workshop-tickets-634349665927 \n\nNote: CHAW is unfortunately accessible only via stairs. SUMMARY:CHAW Film Photo Residency 2023 - Tadael H. Asfaha
DESCRIPTION:God Hates Us: Death of Chocolate City\nJune 19th through July 21st\, 2023 \nCHAW Art Gallery \nOpening Reception on June 19th from 7:00pm-9:00pm. \n“God Hates Us: The Death of Chocolate City” is a thought-provoking exploration of the decline of Blackness in DC. The series delves into the city’s societal issues and the deterioration of its urban landscape\, capturing the profound consequences of external forces on this once vibrant African-American community. Through striking imagery\, it highlights the loss of cultural vitality\, social disintegration\, and the challenges faced by marginalized residents. Abandoned structures\, neglected infrastructure\, and the struggles stemming from systemic racism and socioeconomic disparities are vividly portrayed. By juxtaposing images of the city’s past glory with its current state of decline\, the series aims to evoke powerful emotions and implore viewers to confront the neglected issues plaguing the unique cultural fabric of Washington\, D.C.\, known as the “Chocolate City” \nAbout the Artist: \nEritrean born\, swam to DC — Tadael’s love for art and photography has allowed him to steadily document the erosion of Blackness and culture in his hometown. Through his lens as a DC native\, he sheds light on the challenges faced by his community\, allowing their stories to be heard and their experiences to be seen.
