SUMMARY:Gallery Exhibit: "Feels Like Summer" - Yewande Kotun Davis (2025 Resident Artist)
DESCRIPTION:Feels Like Summer\n2025 CHAW Resident Artist – Yewande Kotun Davis \nJanuary 3rd – February 22nd\, 2025 \nCHAW Art Gallery \n  \nYewande will use her time as the 2025 CHAW Resident Artist to develop a new body of work\, titled “Feels Like Summer.” Inspired by the work of authors\, Nayyirah Waheed\, Tricia Hersey\, and EbonyJanice Moore\, among others\, this body of work will expand on Yewande’s social practice rooted in community care\, and is in many ways\, a response to the palpable collective grief and heaviness that has overtaken her and our daily lives. Through narrative portraiture\, contemporary still life-like imagery\, and curated micro-installations\, Yewande invites viewers to slow down\, embrace the lightness of summer as a feeling rather than a season\, and imagine a world where our bodies— her body— can finally embrace rest\, ease\, joy\, and play.  \n  \nBiography \nYewande is an American Nigerian visual artist\, curator\, and social practitioner using her creative practice as a means for community care. While her first career as a healthcare administrator lends to her expertise at the intersection of health and wellness and racial justice\, her Nigerian heritage and Southern upbringing lend to her love of storytelling. As such\, Yewande’s work celebrates\, reframes\, and even reimagines narratives that have been inadequately or falsely delivered in the past. Through direct social and community engagement\, which often informs her work\, Yewande typically centers the layered experiences of Black folks— most often women and children— highlighting joy\, resilience\, and shared humanity. Within her work\, Yewande marries first-hand narratives with vibrant colors\, reimagined yet familiar imagery\, and attention to naming in order to highlight our connectedness and drive meaningful dialogues that promote healing and redefine the human experience.

SUMMARY:We Happy Few presents "R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots)"
DESCRIPTION:Sadly\, the remaining performances of “R.U.R.\n(Rossum’s Universal Robots)” have been canceled. Please contact boxoffice@wehappyfewdc.com for more information.\n\nR.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots)\nby Karel Čapek\n\n\nbased on the translation by Nigel Playfair & Paul Selver\n\n\nOct 31-Nov 16\nat the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop\n545 7th St SE\, Washington DC 20003\nTickets: CLICK HERE\n\nThe Original Robot Apocalypse Story. Really.\n \nHumans have invented intelligent robots that look just like them to do all their menial tasks. That is\, until the robots revolt. Who saw that one coming? Famous for being the first use of the word “robot”—this play invented all the tropes. \n \nRossum has developed a method to create human-like robots\, and a factory is built on a remote island to crank out enough robots to meet demand. Around the world\, robots quickly replace humans in what are considered menial tasks: assembly lines\, domestic labor\, secretarial work\, etc. A young woman journeys to the island to free the robots\, but in her naive enthusiasm\, becomes deeply embroiled in the fate of the robots\, and ultimately\, the fate of the human race. R.U.R. is a sci-fi melodrama before the genre existed. \n\n\nDIRECTED BY – Matt Reckeweg \nFEATURING \nMade Key\, Paige O’Malley\, Emilia Pazniokas\, Andrew Quilpa\, Matthew Sparacino\, Shaquille Stewart\, and Scott Whalen \n \nDESIGN TEAM \nMakenzi Wentela (stage management) \nKerry McGee (producing) \nKeith Hock (production management) \nJason Aufdem-Brinke (lighting design) \nAmy Bormet (original music composition) \nMatt Reckeweg (set design) \nLee Gerstenhaber (costume design) \nJaimee Fricklas (technical direction) \nRobert Pike (fight choreography) \nKeith Hock (dramaturgy) \nTodd Hilgert (graphic design) \n  \nwww.wehappyfewdc.com/rur \n\n

SUMMARY:We Happy Few presents "Rossum's Universal Robots (R.U.R.)" Sneak Peak
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday June 1 at 7:30pm for a sneak peak at the Original Robot Apocalypse Story. We Happy Few will be bringing Karel Čapek’s Rossum’s Universal Robots (R.U.R.) to the CHAW black box.\n\nHumans have invented intelligent robots that look just like them to do all their menial tasks. That is\, until the robots revolt. Who saw that one coming? Famous for being the first use of the word “robot”—this play invented all the tropes. \n\nWe’ll be sharing a sneak peak of the Fall 2024 performance\, a talk about robots in the media from dramaturg and self-professed sci-fi nerd Keith Hock\, and a talk with the artists involved. Drinks will be provided.\nTickets are $10 – get yours NOW!\nhttps://www.wehappyfewdc.com/rur
