DESCRIPTION:Greg Skrtic: Retrospective 1999-2024\nOn Display February 24th through March 22nd\, 2025\nCapitol Hill Arts Workshop \nArt Gallery \n545 7th St SE Washington DC 20003 \n\nReception: Saturday March 1st\, 2025\, 5:30pm-7:00pm \n\nNote from Greg: \nThe work included in this is indicative of my creative journey over the last 25 years. It represents a major shift in style\, color theory\, and thematic development. \nWhen I look at this volume of work\, I am reminded of a quote\, “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” Up until 1999 I was greatly influenced by Salvadore Dali and the Surrealists. During the late 1990’s\, while living in Lithuania\, I was also influenced by the Catholic church and Old World icons and altar pieces. “Ghosts of Infertility” documents our struggles to conceive a child and came at a time of scientific discovery and technological advancement. We successfully cloned the first sheep\, digital television promised a new way of seeing things\, LIFE ON MARS!!! And yet we continue to cling to our cultural heritage and superstitions in times of crisis. \nThe first few years of raising a child are some of the happiest\, most trying times of family life. The death of a child brings on the darkest\, most trying times of family life. “Mother and Child” from 2000\, and from 2000 – 2002 the first three of the “Muses” tryptic\, were some of the happiest times for our young family. When tragedy struck in spring 2002 my work took on a shift in thematic development\, exploring subjects like dreaming\, the after-life\, and alternate planes of existence. Then\, in 2020\, COVID happened\, which changed everything all over again. \nAs you view my artwork\, take the time to look deeper into the paintings in order to connect on a more visceral level with the images and your own family life experiences. I hope you enjoy my art and\, if you wish\, please leave your thoughts in a message in my guest book.

As such\, Yewande’s work celebrates\, reframes\, and even reimagines narratives that have been inadequately or falsely delivered in the past. Through direct social and community engagement\, which often informs her work\, Yewande typically centers the layered experiences of Black folks— most often women and children— highlighting joy\, resilience\, and shared humanity. Within her work\, Yewande marries first-hand narratives with vibrant colors\, reimagined yet familiar imagery\, and attention to naming in order to highlight our connectedness and drive meaningful dialogues that promote healing and redefine the human experience.  \n

DESCRIPTION:Feels Like Summer\n2025 CHAW Resident Artist – Yewande Kotun Davis \nJanuary 3rd – February 22nd\, 2025 \nCHAW Art Gallery \n  \nYewande will use her time as the 2025 CHAW Resident Artist to develop a new body of work\, titled “Feels Like Summer.” Inspired by the work of authors\, Nayyirah Waheed\, Tricia Hersey\, and EbonyJanice Moore\, among others\, this body of work will expand on Yewande’s social practice rooted in community care\, and is in many ways\, a response to the palpable collective grief and heaviness that has overtaken her and our daily lives. This juried show has the theme “By Design” and the wide range of interpretations and media capture the imagination of design in its many forms. Juror\, Jan Kern\, an artist who creates collaged paintings that have been widely shown in exhibitions\, will discuss the selected art pieces at the reception. SUMMARY:Gallery Exhibit: "Cycles" - Capitol Hill Art League
DESCRIPTION:Capitol Hill Art League Presents \nCYCLES\nThe Capitol Hill Art League (CHAL) members were invited to submit 2- or 3-dimensional works in any media invoking the idea of Cycles.  The resulting work includes repeating patterns\, shifting of phases and perspectives\, and many notions of  the concept of Cycles. \nThis members-only exhibition\, juried by Joren Lindholm\, will be on display in the CHAW Gallery at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW)\, from July 23 through August 23\, 2024. \nThere will be an opening reception from 5:30-7:00 pm\, on Saturday\,  July 27th\, at CHAW\, located at 547 7th Street\, S.E. Washington\, DC\, 20003. \nJuror Joren Lindholm\, will discuss the art and give awards to the artists at the reception. Joren Lindholm received his BFA\, cum laude\, from Knox College in Galesburg\, Illinois. Residing in New York City\, he attended the New York Studio School of Drawing\, Painting and Sculpture. In 2004\, Lindholm received his MFA in Painting at American University in Washington\, D.C. He has been the recipient of the Milton Avery scholarship in Art and the Beverly Creighton scholarship\, and was a Post Baccalaureate fellow in art education at Knox College. He has been a guest lecturer and assistant instructor at the Delaware College of Art and Design\, York College\, Corcoran College of Art and Design and American University. Residencies include the Vermont Studio Center\, Pyramid Atlantic Center for Printmaking and the Charles Cecil Studio in Florence\, Italy. His work has been exhibited in New York City\, Washington\, D.C.\, Baltimore\, Beijing\, and New Dehli.
